To replace the ECT sensor, ensure the ignition key is in the Off position and drain approximately 1/4 of the engine coolant to bring it below the level of the sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector and carefully unscrew the sensor from the rear of the cylinder head, discarding the old sealing ring. It is not necessary to wrap the threads of the new sensor with Teflon sealing tape, as the new O-ring should prevent leakage. Use a new sealing ring during installation, which should be done in reverse order of removal, ensuring the sensor is tightened securely. For testing, remove the sensor and partially submerge it in a suitable pan of water, keeping the electrical terminals dry. Measure the resistance between the two terminals with a digital volt or ohm meter; at room temperature (68 degrees-F), resistance should be between 2.32k and 2.59k ohms, and at 176 degrees-F, it should be between 0.31k and 0.326k ohms. If the resistance does not fall within these ranges, the sensor should be replaced.
