Toyota Avalon Starter Solenoid is a switch that allows an ignition current to unlock the heavy battery power necessary to spin the starter motor and, in turn, wake the engine. Starter Solenoid is housed beside the starter motor. It has an electromagnet that snaps shut the large contacts of the solenoid. This takes place when the driver turns the key. At that time, an internal plunger pushes the starter pinion into the ring gear so that torque can flow smoothly. When the key is released, the magnetic field collapses, the contacts open, and the return spring pulls back the pinion. This prevents the running engine from overdriving the starter. The early models of Toyota Avalon had a Bendix style which relied on inertia and did not have a dedicated linkage, while the later types applied the more reliable shift-fork type Starter Solenoid. This positively engages the gear and uses a one-way clutch for protection, cutting down on grinding noises and gear wear. In newer Avalon trims, the Starter Solenoid has been placed directly onto the motor housing to save space and cut wiring length. No matter the generation, a battery voltage that's too low causes the Starter Solenoid to click without closing the high-current circuit in any Toyota sedan.
