Connect the negative clamp with the battery first. First, you need to take off the knee bolster and both trim panels - one on the driver's side, one on the passenger's side. Models with Smart Key systems require you to pry the trim panel from the sides and disconnect the electric connector to the "Power" button. Take your time pulling out the clips on the upper, center, and sides of the instrument panel, then lift off each panel. Turn the knob on the shift lever to the left and take out the knob. For vehicles with automatic transmissions, take these steps: Lift the floor shift indicator up from the center console and carefully pull clips out with hand tools; disconnect any wire connections; and unmount the whole indicator piece. To access the floor shift boot on manual models, lift the cup holder lid and use small tools to lift the console cover off the side by side. Lift the floor console top trim panel to free its mounting clips, and take it off. Take off the mounting screws under the storage box, and press it out far enough to disconnect the electrical wires. On Camry models, lift the register panel above the center trim and disconnect the electrical connection there. The radio and trim must come out as one assembly. Use standard tools to remove the console side mounting screws from the front and pull off both sides. Unsnap the armrest, get rid of the console pocket (if you have one), and pull up the carpet from the console bottom. Take out the screws that hold the console up, then lift it off; some Camry versions need a push-type fastener removed beneath the console before you can do this. Installation is the reverse of removal.
