To disconnect the distributor, you have to take off the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, turn on the headlights, and take out the speakers with microphones and locate whether their is an anti theft system in the stereo or not. Subsequently, remove the electrical connectors from the distributor. Locate the terminal number one by finding a notch or a raised number one on the distributor cap or find out from the number one spark plug wire. Thus, the distributor cap should be unscrewed and then the engine should be rotated until the rotor is aligned to the number one spark plug terminal. When assembling the distributor you need to mark the edge of the distributor base below the rotor tip, you also need to mark the distributor base and the engine block for correct reinstallation. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt/s, and then extract the distributor by pulling up on it, while being careful not to rotate the crankshaft. As for the installation, if the crankshaft has shifted, locate the position of Top Dead Center according to the number one piston and arrange the distributor and the rotor. Place the distributor back into an engine in the same position it was prior the removal. For gear-driven distributors, make sure the dimples on the driven gear and housing cone is in line or for lug-driven distributors make sure that the two match marks are aligned. If the distributor does not seat completely flip open the cap and check the alignment of the marks and the rotor. Tighten the hold-down bolt(s) and Preset the ignition timing and final tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
