- Q: How to remove the accelerator cable on Toyota Highlander?A:This procedure is specific to 1999 through 2003 models only, as 2004 and later models do not use an accelerator cable. To begin, remove the engine cover. Then, loosen the accelerator cable lock nut and back off the cable adjustment nut to disengage the cable from its bracket. Next, disengage the cable from the throttle cam by aligning it with the slot in the cam and sliding the cable end plug out. Trace the cable back to the firewall, noting its routing, and detach any cable clips or guides. Inside the vehicle, disengage the cable from the accelerator pedal by pulling the cable end out and guiding it out through the slot on the left. Remove the bolts and detach the cable from the firewall, then pull the cable through the firewall from the engine compartment side. Finally, installation is the reverse of removal.
