How to remove and adjust the shift cable in a Toyota Rav4?

To adjust or replace the shift cable, start by lifting the vehicle front and securing it on jack stands, if required. Remove the center console and detach the cable from the Automatic Transmission Shift Levers. Take out the air filter housing and disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever by removing the nut. Detach the cable housing from the bracket on the transaxle by removing the clip. Remove the two bolts holding the shift cable grommet to the vehicle body, and pull out the cable through the engine compartment. For installation, reverse these steps. To adjust, shift the lever to Neutral, locate the cable adjuster, and slide the cover forward. Pull out the green lock, tighten the cable by pulling the rod towards the vehicle's rear, lock the piece into the adjuster case, and replace the cover. Finally, check the operation in each shift lever position, ensuring the starter works only in Park and Neutral.

The transmission and the shifter within the cabin are linked together via a Shift Cable, allowing the driver to transition from one gear to another smoothly. This provides versatility to the RAV4. In the early RAV4 models, which were fitted with manual floor gear levers, there was a dual Shift Cable assembly that helped to couple the console-mounted shifter with the front-wheel drive transaxle, thus providing an H-pattern shifting. In automatic variants, there was a single selector Shift Cable linking the console lever and the transmission manual arm, using the standardized PRNDL order and providing additional protection against accidental shifts through a spring loaded button on the handle and ignition brake interlock. Over time, the crossover evolved, but the company retained the cable for traditional automatics as some modern Toyota crossovers are now using electronic shift by wire types. In this case, sensors inside the lever command a motorized actuator. While this does away with the mechanical Shift Cable, it gives a familiar feel. When a Shift Cable is stretched or breaks, the cable may become loose or prevent a Toyota driver from moving a Toyota RAV4 out of gear.

Q: How to remove and adjust the shift cable in a Toyota Rav4?

To adjust or replace the shift cable, start by lifting the vehicle front and securing it on jack stands, if required. Remove the center console and detach the cable from the Automatic Transmission Shift Levers. Take out the air filter housing and disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever by removing the nut. Detach the cable housing from the bracket on the transaxle by removing the clip. Remove the two bolts holding the shift cable grommet to the vehicle body, and pull out the cable through the engine compartment. For installation, reverse these steps. To adjust, shift the lever to Neutral, locate the cable adjuster, and slide the cover forward. Pull out the green lock, tighten the cable by pulling the rod towards the vehicle's rear, lock the piece into the adjuster case, and replace the cover. Finally, check the operation in each shift lever position, ensuring the starter works only in Park and Neutral.
