A: Remove the CV boot. Disassembly: Mount the driveaxle in a vise with wood lined jaws. Check the CV joint for excessive play in the radial direction. Check for smooth operation throughout the full range of motion for each CV joint. If a boot is torn, disassemble the joint, clean the components and inspect for damage. Using a pair of pliers, squeeze the retaining tabs of the large inboard joint boot clamp and slide it away from the CV joint. Using a pair of side cutters cut the boot clamps. Mark the inboard joint to the shaft. Using a pair of snap-ring pliers, expand the snap-ring that connects the outboard joint shaft to the inboard joint and separate the shafts. If you haven't already cut them off, remove both boots. Wrap the splines on the inner end the axleshaft with electrical or duct tape to protect the boots from the sharp edges of the splines. Check: Thoroughly clean all components, including the outer CV joint assembly, with solvent until the old CV joint grease is completely removed. Inspect all visible bearing surfaces for cracks, pitting, scoring and other signs of wear. Reassembly: Slide the clamps and boot(s) onto the axleshaft. Pack the outboard and inboard joint assemblies and boots with grease. Align the matchmarks and place the inboard joint on the shaft, then using a pair of snap-ring pliers, expand the snap-ring and seat the joint on the shaft. Slide the boot into place, making sure both ends seat in their grooves. Adjust the length of the driveaxle. Equalize the pressure in the boot, then tighten and secure the boot clamps. Install the driveaxle assembly.
