Toyota Sienna Accelerator Cable

The Accelerator Cable of a Toyota Sienna allows the driver to operate the vehicle's throttle with precision. The Accelerator Cable runs between the gas pedal inside the car and the throttle plate in the intake. Whenever the driver presses it down, it pulls the throttle plate open. This allows for more air to enter the carburetor venturi. Lowered pressure in the venturi draws more fuel from the float bowl. The Accelerator Cable connects foot input directly to airflow, meaning a fuel air ratio that instantaneously matches the demands of changing power. Thus, it avoids hesitation when merging or climbing hills. Across Toyota Sienna production years, there are two basic layouts that appear. The first is a flexible steel cable that has a sheath so that it can be routed smoothly. The other is a rigid rod style mechanical linkage which was applied on some early engine packages. While they both accomplish the same task of moving the throttle plate, they go about it in very different ways. One has greater routing freedom while the other more effectively dampens vibrations. Whatever the style, every Accelerator Cable interacts with the carburetor's accelerator pump to deliver an extra shot of fuel whenever the pedal is pressed quickly. It also interacts with the choke system that enriches mixtures during cold starts, ensuring good driveability for Toyota owners. The proper cleaning and tensioning of the Accelerator Cable is maintenance to ensure every Sienna responds to throttle inputs without delay.

Toyota Sienna Accelerator Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, install, and adjustment of the accelerator cable on Toyota Sienna?
    A:
This information is relevant only on the models up to year 2006, as from year 2007 the mechanism is an electrically operated throttle without the cable. To disconnect the accelerator cable first, pull it out from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, unscrew the locknut utilizing two wrenches on the threaded part of the accelerator cable which is located at the Throttle Body. Turn the throttle lever anticlockwise and push the accelerator cable end off the hole in the lever Next pull the end of the accelerator cable out of the accelerator pedal. Next, remove the cable and the casing out of the firewall to the engine compartment. For installation replace the steps with the following, making sure the grommet fits correctly in to the firewall. To retract the cable, there will always be some slack which need to be lifted and the adjusting screw will have to be turned till it is approximately 1/8 of an inch or 3 millimeters from the cable bracket. Secure the locknut and observe the cable bend on the throttle lever end and the housing casing should be 3/8 to 1/2 inch. If the deflection is not within given specifications, locknut has to be loosened in order to adjust the nut. After adjustment, check to be sure that the throttle valve opens wide when accelerator pedal is pushed to the floor and shuts when it is released, with the cable free of any stiff or rigid movement.
