Toyota Tercel Vapor Canister
Toyota Tercel Vapor Canister is the main storage area for gas vapors, preventing raw hydrocarbons from escaping the fuel system into the atmosphere. The Vapor Canister, which is found either on the tank or in the engine bay, contains activated charcoal with millions of tiny pores that grab and hold the fumes until conditions are right to burn them. When the motor fires, a purge valve opens, and intake vacuum pulls some fresh air through the charcoal. The trapped vapor mixes with the normal fuel mixture so nothing goes to waste. The early Tercel models employed this uncomplicated arrangement, but some units contained a small service filter that has to be changed at periodic intervals to keep air flowing freely. Subsequent generations of the Tercel maintained the basic design of the Vapor Canister. However, with the advancement of Toyota electronics, they incorporated OBD-II sensors. Additionally, they integrated a second Vapor Canister vent solenoid that enables the engine computer to conduct self-tests. This improvement allows for quick detection of loose caps and tiny leaks. Regardless of these improvements, every Toyota still uses the same basic Vapor Canister action, adsorb, store, then purge, to lower smog and even recover a bit of mileage.
