To remove the battery, you need to loosen the clamp nut and detach the earth lead from the battery negative terminal post. Then, pivot up the plastic cover from the positive terminal and loosen the positive lead clamp nut. Finally, undo the two nuts securing the battery top clamp bar and lift it off, taking care as it may also secure the accelerator cable support bracket. Lift out the battery, keeping it level.

If you notice corrosion on the battery, especially around the terminals, you should remove the battery for cleaning.

If the car covers a small annual mileage, it is recommended to check the specific gravity of the electrolyte every three months using a hydrometer. The specific gravity readings should be compared with a table that takes into account the electrolyte temperature. If there is a variation of 0.040 or more between any cells, it indicates a loss of electrolyte or deterioration of the internal plates. In the case of a maintenance-free battery, topping-up and testing of the electrolyte is not possible, so a battery condition indicator or voltmeter should be used. When testing the battery using a voltmeter, it is important to ensure that the battery has not been charged for the previous six hours. If the voltage reading is less than 12.0 volts, the battery is discharged and should be charged. Charging should be done at a rate of 3.5 to 4 amps or using a trickle charger at 1.5 amps. Rapid 'boost' charges are not recommended as they can cause damage to the battery plates. Maintenance-free batteries take longer to recharge and require a constant voltage type charger. If the battery is fully discharged, it should be recharged by a professional.
