Most electric rear view mirrors use two motors to move the glass; one for up and down adjustments and one for left-right adjustments. The control switch has a selector portion that sends voltage to the left or right side mirror. With the ignition ON but the engine OFF, roll down the windows and operate the mirror control switch through all functions (left-right and up-down) for both the left and right side mirrors. Listen carefully for the sound of the electric motors running in the mirrors. If the motors can be heard but the mirror glass doesn't move, there's a problem with the drive mechanism inside the mirror. If the mirrors do not operate and no sound comes from the mirrors, check the fuse. If the fuse is OK, remove the mirror control switch from the dashboard and have the switch continuity checked by a dealership service department or other qualified automobile repair facility. If the mirror still doesn't work, remove the mirror and check the wires at the mirror for voltage. If there's no voltage in each switch position, check the circuit between the mirror and control switch for opens and shorts. If there's voltage, remove the mirror and test it off the vehicle with jumper wires, replacing the mirror if it fails this test.

To remove manually operated outside mirrors, start by removing the control handle and detaching the mirror cover using a small screwdriver. Then, remove the three retaining nuts and detach the mirror. For power mirrors, unplug the electrical connector before removing it. To remove the interior rearview mirror, disconnect the electrical connector if it's lighted, and use a Torx screwdriver to remove the bolt in the mirror-mounting pad. Slide the mirror off the pad and reinstall in reverse order. If the mirror pad comes off the windshield glass, use an inexpensive kit to reinstall it and allow the proper interval for bonding before attaching the car mirror.

If there's no voltage in each switch position, the circuit between the mirror and control switch should be checked for opens and shorts. If there is voltage, the mirror should be removed and tested off the vehicle with jumper wires, and if it fails this test, it should be replaced.

Installation is the reverse of the removal process.

Check the fuse.

If the motors can be heard but the mirror glass doesn't move, there's a problem with the drive mechanism inside the mirror.

Check the circuit between the mirror and control switch for opens and shorts.

If the mount plate itself has come off the windshield, adhesive kits are available at auto parts stores to resecure it. Follow the instructions included with the kit.

1. Pry off the mirror trim cover on the inside of the door. 2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the mirror (if equipped). For electric mirrors, also remove the three mirror mounting nuts and disconnect the connector. 3. Remove the three mirror retaining nuts and detach the mirror from the vehicle. 4. Installation is the reverse of removal.
