Q:
How to check and repack the front wheel bearings and Wheel Hub on Toyota Tacoma,Toyota 4Runner and Toyota T100? Posted by Customer
A:
This procedure is specific to Tacoma and T100 models. For 4Runner and 1996 and later 4WD Tacoma models, the front wheel bearing is permanently sealed and cannot be lubricated. To check and repack the front wheel bearings, start by raising the front of the vehicle and spinning each wheel to check for noise, rolling resistance, and endplay. If there is noticeable movement, the bearings should be checked and repacked with grease or replaced if necessary. Remove the wheel and the disc brake caliper, and on 4WD vehicles, remove the freewheel hub. On 2WD vehicles, use a small chisel and hammer to remove the dust cover, cotter pin, spindle nut-lock, and spindle nut. On 4WD vehicles, use a small chisel and hammer to bend back the tabs on the lock washer and remove the outer locknut, lock washer, inner locknut, and thrust washer. Pull the hub assembly out slightly and then push it back in to disengage the outer wheel bearing. Remove the hub assembly from the spindle and use a screwdriver or seal puller tool to pry out the grease seal. Remove the inner wheel bearing and clean all parts with solvent, inspecting for any damage. Replace any defective bearing races and use high-temperature front wheel bearing grease to pack the bearings. Apply a thin coat of grease to the spindle and place a small quantity of grease inboard of each bearing race inside the hub. Install the grease-packed inner bearing, a new seal, and tap the seal into place with a hammer and block of wood. Carefully place the hub assembly onto the spindle and push the grease-packed outer bearing into position. On 2WD vehicles, install the washer and spindle nut, tightening it slightly and then spinning the hub in a forward direction while tightening to seat the bearings. Loosen the spindle nut, tighten it by hand until snug, and install the nut lock and cotter pin. On 4WD vehicles, install the thrust washer and inner locknut, tightening it while rotating the hub to seat the bearings. Back off the inner locknut, tighten it again, and install the lock washer and outer locknut. Recheck the bearing preload and adjust if necessary. Finally, reinstall the remaining components in reverse order, lightly greasing the internal components of the manual locking hub assembly with chassis grease.
