Drive belts in engines require regular checks and adjustments to prevent failures. Models from 1999-2007 use a single serpentine belt, while early V6 models use two. From 2008, models use a single belt with automatic tensioners. Inspect belts for damage like cracking, fraying, or glazing, and replace if necessary. Replacement involves removing the right front wheel and inner fender well. For 2.4L and 2.7L engines, release belt tension, mark the belt and pulley, install the new belt, and adjust the tensioner. For 3.0L/3.3L engines, replace both belts if needed. For 3.5L engines, removing the AC compressor may be necessary.

For 2006 and earlier models, the alternator/AC compressor and power steering pump drivebelts are on the engine's right end. These should be regularly checked for wear and tension. The cars have two belts, one for the alternator and AC compressor, and another for the power steering pump. To check, open the hood and inspect each belt visually and by touch. If worn, replace the belt. Use a belt tension gauge or rule of thumb to check tension. If adjustment is needed, loosen the bolts and adjust. To replace, follow the adjustment procedures and remove the old belt from the crankshaft pulley. It's advised to replace both belts simultaneously. For 2007 and later models, there's one automatically tensioned belt. The checks are the same as earlier models. To replace, loosen the right front wheel's lug nuts, raise the car and remove the wheel. Remove the inner fender splash shield to access the tensioner pulley. Loosen the pulley, remove the old belt, and install the new one as per the underhood routing diagram sticker.

You can check the belt tension using a Nippondenso or Burroughs belt tension gauge. If these tools are not available, you can also use the rule of thumb method. The goal is to ensure proper tension in the belts.

When replacing the belts, the old belts should be taken to the parts store for comparison, and the new belts should be properly centered in the pulley grooves.
