The drive belts, situated at the front of the engine, play a critical role in vehicle operation and should be periodically inspected and adjusted to prevent potential failures. Four-cylinder models from 1999 to 2007 employ a single serpentine belt, while early V6 models (3.0L and 3.3L) use two belts, one for the power steering pump and one for the alternator, water pump, and air conditioning compressor. Models from 2008 onwards use a single drive belt with automatic tensioners that do not require adjustment. With the engine off, inspect the belts for signs of damage, such as severed cores, adhesive rubber separation, core detachment, rib separation, cracking, fraying, or glazing. If any of these conditions are present, replace the belt(s). Replacement involves disconnecting the negative battery cable, removing the right front wheel, and the right side inner fender well and splash shield. For 2.4L and 2.7L four-cylinder engines, release belt tension using a wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt, mark the belt and pulley groove for correct routing, install the new belt, and rotate the tensioner to position the belt correctly. For 3.0L/3.3L VG engines, follow the adjustment procedure, remove the old belt, and replace both belts if needed. For 3.5L V6 engines, removing the air conditioning compressor may be necessary for tensioner replacement. Tighten the fasteners to specified torque values and install the drive belt. Adjust the alternator/AC compressor and power steering pump belts as necessary for proper tension.
