Q:
What is the location and maintenance procedure for the drivebelt in an engine? Posted by Customer
A:
The drivebelt is located at the front of the engine and is prone to failure over time. It should be inspected periodically for separation, cracking, fraying, glazing, and other signs of damage. If any of these conditions are present, the belt should be replaced. On some models, removing the under-vehicle splash shield can make inspection easier. For 2UZ-FE engines, the belt should be replaced when the pointer on the automatic tensioner falls outside of the acceptable range. To replace the belt, release the tensioner by rotating the bolt counterclockwise, remove the old belt, and install the new one, making sure it is centered on all of the pulleys. For all other engines, disconnect the negative battery terminal, remove the engine cover and splash shield, release tension on the belt tensioner pulley, and remove the belt. To install the new belt, either lock the tensioner with a dowel pin or drill bit, or release tension on the tensioner pulley and route the belt over the pulleys. For V6 and V8 engines, remove the tensioner and reinstall it using the reverse of the removal procedure.
