    Q:
How to operate and check the power brake booster on 2002 through 2008 Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before checking the brakes on Solara models, first push the brake pedal several times with the engine off to make sure the pedal distance stays the same. Starting the engine with your foot pressing the brake pedal tells you the booster is working properly when the pedal drops a bit. Start the engine, let it run for a minute or two, then shut it off. Keep the brake pedal gently pressed. A lower pressure after each time you press indicates the booster is airtight. When you can idle the car, keep the brake pedal pressed down and turn off the engine with the pedal engaged; if no reserve brake pedal drop happens in 30 seconds, the booster is tight and working correctly. Since brake booster units are hard to work on because of their technology and essential role in brakes, expert mechanics replace them with either new or refurbished ones. Free the brake master cylinder by undoing it and take off the air filter. If needed, unscrew the screw that holds the charcoal canister. You must start by disconnecting the vacuum hose from the brake booster. Then, when looking inside the vehicle's passenger compartment, unscrew the driver's walking-panel, footrest bracket, and supporting frame. When your car has cruise control, detach the two nuts and put the cruise control ECU to the side to gain easier access to take apart the brake pedal system. To detach the booster pushrod handle from the brake pedal, pull off the pin-retaining clip and gently pull out the pin. Take off the four nuts and washers connecting the brake booster to the firewall, then pull it straight out of its position. To put the brake booster back in place, tighten the clevis locknut, plus both booster mounting nuts properly. When installing a replacement power brake booster, check pushrod space using two measurements: the distance between the pushrod and master cylinder, then the same distance to the piston pocket. Calculate the total gap by combining these distances. You need to make the pushrod longer or shorter to create the correct brake clearance. Adjust the height and slide of your brake pedal, then cleanse air from the system.
