Q:
How to maintain and replace a power brake booster unit on Toyota 4Runner,Toyota T100 and 1995 through 2004 Toyota Tacoma? Posted by Customer
A:
The power brake booster unit requires no special maintenance apart from periodic inspection of the vacuum hose and the case. To check the operation of the power brake booster, depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off and make sure there's no change in the pedal reserve distance. Then, depress the pedal and start the engine. If the pedal goes down slightly, operation is normal. To check the airtightness of the booster, start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes. Depress the brake pedal slowly several times. If the pedal depresses less each time, the booster is airtight. Additionally, depress the brake pedal while the engine is running, then stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there's no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. If a problem develops with the power brake booster, it is recommended to install a new or rebuilt unit as disassembly requires special tools and is not ordinarily performed by the home mechanic. To remove the booster, disconnect the intake manifold vacuum hose and remove the nuts attaching the master cylinder to the booster. In the passenger compartment, remove the retainer clip, disengage the pedal return spring, pull out the clevis pin, and disconnect the power brake pushrod from the top of the brake pedal. Remove the nuts attaching the booster to the firewall and carefully pull the booster unit away from the firewall. To install a new power brake booster unit, place it in position on the firewall and tighten the retaining nuts. Connect the brake pedal, ensuring the use of a new retainer clip if necessary, and hook up the return spring. If a new unit is being installed, check the pushrod clearance and adjust the pushrod length if necessary. Install the master cylinder and reattach the intake vacuum hose. Finally, adjust the brake pedal height and freeplay and test the operation of the brakes before placing the vehicle in normal operation.
