If a rack and pinion boot is torn, dirt and moisture can damage the steering gear, so it should be replaced. Begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and placing it securely on jackstands before removing the front wheels. Next, remove the tie-rod end and locknut. After that, take off the boot clamps; the outer clamp on the rack and pinion boot can be removed with pliers, while the inner clamp must be cut off. Slide the boot off the tie-rod. Installation is the reverse of removal, taking care not to damage the boot while sliding it into place. Ensure the tie-rod end castle nut is tightened to the specified torque and use a new cotter pin, then securely tighten the locknut and the lug nuts to the appropriate torque.
