Pull the black cable off its connection to the ground. Take out the knee bolster and driver and passenger side trim panels; to unplug the power button, unbolt and disconnect the electrical connector when a Smart Key system is installed. Unscrew the instrument panel's upper, center, and side trim pieces by picking up the middle where the clips are and work your way out to both sides. Turn the knob on the shift lever to the left, and pull it off. To remove the floor-shift indicator on automatic transaxle vehicles, use a flat tool to carefully lift it up from the console. When the clips release, disconnect all electric connections and take the indicator out. If you have a manual transmission, first open the cup holder lid. Then carefully lift the floor shift cover from the console to get the mounting clips apart. Pull the cover and boot off together. To take apart the seat heater switch panel on Avalon models, lift it up first to release the four clips holding it, disconnect the electrical cord, and pull the whole switch section off. Pull the floor console top trim panel from both sides until mounting clips come loose, then take it off; Avalon models have extra fasteners to remove first before clips can be detached. Unscrew the box mounting screws at the bottom, and pull it out a bit to disconnect the electrical wires. When fixing an Avalon, you should take out both the center register and A/C heater control panel plus the audio unit. Take off all screws holding the front sides, one above and one below, then lift off the sides; on Avalon cars, the console panel is a longer piece. Pull back the armrest, take out the attached storage pocket, then raise and take out the carpet under the console piece. After unscrewing each bolt that holds the console in place, lift it off; some models need you to free a small clamp at the bottom before you can lift it out. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Lift up the armrest and the cover plate at the floor of the armrest compartment to access the screws for the rear console box. The rear console box is retained by two bolts in the rear and two screws at the front edge.
