- A:The evaporative emissions control system functions to draw fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, store them in a charcoal canister, and then burn them during normal engine operation. A common symptom of a fault in this system is a strong fuel odor from the rear of the vehicle. If a fuel odor is detected, an inspection of the charcoal canister duct is necessary.
