Q:
How to remove and install the Automatic Disconnecting Differential? Posted by Customer
A:
The Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD) is a system that connects the power flow through the right axleshaft in 4WD mode and disconnects it in 2WD mode. This system eliminates the need for locking hubs but can increase wear on CV joints, dust boots, and other components. If there are issues with shifting into or out of 4WD, it is recommended to have the ADD system checked by a qualified repair shop. To remove the differential carrier, the wheels, driveaxles, engine under cover, and differential lubricant must be removed. The driveshaft is disconnected and supported, and the breather hose, vacuum tubing bracket, actuator electrical connector, and vacuum hoses are detached. The differential is then supported and lowered by removing the mounting bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal, with the differential being refilled with lubricant and the lug nuts tightened. To remove the ADD actuator, the hose and electrical connector are disconnected, and the retaining bolts are removed. The actuator is then removed and installation is the reverse of removal, with the mating surfaces of the differential and actuator being cleaned and new RTV sealant applied before tightening the bolts.
