Q:
How to check spark plug wires when new spark plugs are fitted? Posted by Customer
A:
The spark plug wires should be checked whenever new spark plugs are fitted. Begin this procedure by making a visual check of the spark plug wires while the engine is running. In a darkened garage, start the engine and observe each plug wire, being careful not to come into contact with any moving engine parts. If there is a break in the wire, you will see arcing or a small spark at the damaged area. If arcing is noticed, obtain new wires. The spark plug wires should be inspected one at a time to prevent mixing up the order, which is essential for proper engine operation. Each original plug wire should be numbered to help identify its location. If the number is illegible, a piece of tape can be marked with the correct number and wrapped around the plug wire. Note that four-cylinder engines have a spark plug wire for each spark plug, all routed to the coil pack. On V6 engines, there are three coil packs, one mounted over each of the spark plugs on the front bank. From these coils, three spark plug wires are routed around the intake manifold to the rear bank spark plugs, which have a standard boot termination like four-cylinder plug wires. To check the wires, disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug using a removal tool or by grasping the rubber boot and twisting it half a turn. Check inside the boot for corrosion, which will look like a white crusty powder. Push the wire and boot back onto the end of the spark plug, ensuring a tight fit. If it doesn't fit tightly, remove the wire and use pliers to crimp the metal connector inside the wire boot until the fit is snug. Wipe the entire length of the wire with a clean rag to remove built-up dirt and grease, and check for burns, cracks, and other damage. Do not bend the wire sharply to avoid breaking the conductor. Disconnect the wire from the coil pack, checking for corrosion and a tight fit. Replace the wire in the coil pack. Inspect the remaining spark plug wires, ensuring that each one is securely fastened at the coil pack and spark plug. If new spark plug wires are required, purchase a set for your specific engine model and remove and replace the wires one at a time to avoid mix-ups in the firing order.
