    Q:
How to overhaul and install a wheel cylinder on Toyota Land Cruiser? Posted by Customer
    A:
If an overhaul is indicated, usually due to fluid leaks or sticky operation, explore all options before beginning the job. New wheel cylinders are available, making this task quite easy. If rebuilding the wheel cylinder is chosen, ensure a rebuild kit is available beforehand. Always rebuild or replace both wheel cylinders at the same time. To begin removal, raise the front or rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, blocking the wheels at the opposite end to prevent rolling. Remove the brake shoe assembly, then clean all dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Disconnect the brake line(s) using a flare-nut wrench if available, then remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts. Detach the wheel cylinder from the brake backing plate and place it on a clean workbench, immediately plugging the brake line(s) to prevent fluid loss and contamination. For the overhaul, remove the bleeder screw, boots, pistons, cups, and spring from the wheel cylinder body. Clean the wheel cylinder with brake fluid, denatured alcohol, or brake system cleaner, avoiding petroleum-based solvents. Use compressed air to dry the wheel cylinder and blow out the passages. Check the bore for corrosion and score marks; light corrosion can be removed with crocus cloth, but if defects cannot be easily removed or if the bore is scored, replace the cylinder. Lubricate the new cups with brake fluid and assemble the brake cylinder components, ensuring the cup lips face inward. For installation, place the wheel cylinder(s) in position and install the bolts finger tight, ensuring proper placement on vehicles equipped with dual leading type brakes. Connect the brake line(s) to the cylinder, being careful not to cross-thread the fittings, and tighten the wheel cylinder bolts to the specified torque. Securely tighten the brake line(s) and install the brake shoe assembly. Finally, bleed the brakes and check the operation of the brakes carefully before driving the vehicle.
