Q:
How to replace and inspect the air filter as part of a preventive maintenance schedule on Toyota T100,1995 through 2004 Toyota Tacoma and 1996 through 2002 Toyota 4Runner? Posted by Customer
A:
At the specified intervals, the air filter should be replaced with a new one and inspected between filter changes as part of a thorough preventive maintenance schedule. The air filter housing is mounted on the right side of the engine compartment on four cylinder and 3.4L V6 engines, while on 3.0L V6 engines, it is located at the left side. The removal of the air filter begins with detaching the cover retaining clips and all hoses that would interfere with the removal of the air cleaner cover from the air cleaner housing. Care should be taken not to drop anything into the air cleaner assembly while the top cover is off. The filter element can then be lifted out of the housing and the inside of the air cleaner housing wiped clean with a rag. The outer surface of the filter element should be inspected and if dirty, replaced. If only moderately dusty, it can be reused by blowing it clean from the back to the front surface with compressed air. However, as it is a pleated paper type filter, it cannot be washed or oiled. If it cannot be cleaned satisfactorily with compressed air, it should be discarded and replaced. Caution should be taken to never drive the vehicle with the air cleaner removed as excessive engine wear could result and backfiring could even cause a fire under the hood. The new filter should be placed in the air cleaner housing, ensuring it seats properly. The cover is then installed in the reverse order of its removal.
