Toyota 17801-20040 Air Cleaner Filter Element Sub-Assembly

The air filter is located inside a housing on the left(driver's) side of the engine compartment. To remove the cover on 2006 and earlier models, release the two spring clips. On 2007 and later models, start by disconnecting the three vacuum hoses from the air filter cover, then remove the other interfering vacuum hoses. Disconnect the wiring from the air intake tube, then loosen the tube's clamp. Remove the two air filter cover bolts and lift off the cover. Lift the cover up and remove the air filter element. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element. If it is dirty, replace it. If it is only moderately dusty, it can be reused by blowing it clean from the back to the front surface with compressed air. Caution: Never drive the vehicle with the air cleaner removed. Excessive engine wear could result and backfiring could even cause a fire under the hood. Installation is the reverse of removal.

After removing the air filter, you should inspect the outer surface of the filter element.
