To troubleshoot a radiator fan that won't shut off when the engine is cool, disconnect the wiring connector from the coolant temperature switch(es) and bridge the connector. If this shuts off the fan, replace the switch. Test the number 1 and number 2 Engine Coolant Temperature switches for continuity with an ohmmeter. If either switch fails these tests, replace the defective switch. To test an inoperative fan motor, check the fuses or fusible links, then disconnect the electrical connector at the motor and use fused jumper wires to connect the fan directly to the battery. If the fan still does not work, replace the fan motor. If the motor tested OK but is still inoperative, then the fault lies in the relays, wiring, or the cooling fan ECU. To check the relays, locate the main relay box and remove the cooling fan no.1 relay, testing for continuity. If all relays test OK, take the vehicle to a dealer or other qualified repair facility for further diagnosis. To remove the fan, disconnect the negative battery cable, disconnect the wiring connector at the fan motor, unbolt the fan/shroud from the radiator, and lift it from the vehicle. To install, reverse the removal steps and use a new clip when installing the blade to fan motor number 2, orienting the clip's open side to clear the projecting bump on the blade.
