To test an inoperative cooling fan assembly, first check the fuses or fusible links. Then disconnect the electrical connector at the fan assembly and use fused jumper wires to connect the fan directly to the battery. If the fan still does not work, replace the fan assembly. If the assembly tested OK, the problem could lie in the relay(s) temperature switch, or the wiring. For replacement on 2003 and earlier models, disconnect the negative battery cable. If you're removing the condenser fan, drain the cooling system and disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator. Disconnect the wiring connector at the fan assembly. All models have two fans. Both fans should operate all the time at low speed. When the air conditioning is On, both fans should operate at a higher speed. On models with cruise control, disconnect the cruise control actuator wire from the fan shroud for easier removal of fan numberUnbolt the fan/shroud from the radiator and lift it from the vehicle. Hold the fan blades and remove the fan retaining clip. Unbolt the fan motor from the shroud. Installation is the reverse of removal. When installing the blade to fan motor use a new clip and orient the clip's open side to clear the projecting bump on the blade. If a new fan switch is installed, lubricate the O-ring with soapy water before installation. If the cooling system was drained, refill it with the proper type of coolant. For 2004 and later models, remove the fan assembly with the radiator.
