Q:
How to remove and install a fan clutch and Cooling Fan Assembly? Posted by Customer
A:
The coolant overflow reservoir is molded into the fan shroud and cannot be removed separately. Symptoms of fan clutch failure include continuous noisy operation, looseness, vibration, and silicone fluid leaking from the clutch. To check for fan clutch failure, rock the fan back and forth by hand to check for excessive bearing play and turn the blades by hand when the engine is cold to ensure they turn freely. Visually inspect for substantial fluid leakage, a deformed bi-metal spring, or grease leakage from the cooling fan bearing. If any of these conditions exist, the fan clutch should be replaced. When the engine is fully warmed up, turn off the ignition switch and turn the fan by hand. Some resistance should be felt, and if the fan turns easily, it should be replaced. To remove and install the fan clutch, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, remove the engine splash shield and drain the cooling system. Then, remove the engine cover and disconnect the upper hose and overflow hose from the radiator. Remove the fan shroud mounting bolts and unhook the fan shroud mounting tabs from the radiator. Remove the fan clutch-to-water pump mounting nuts and separate the fan from the water pump. Lift the fan and shroud from the engine compartment and separate the fan blades from the viscous clutch hub by removing the mounting nuts. Installation is the reverse of removal.
