Q:
How to test and replace the carbureted engine's fuel level sending unit? Posted by Customer
A:
Before performing any tests on the Fuel Level Sensor, determine the actual fuel level in the fuel tank. On early models, access the Fuel Level Sensor harness near the fuel tank. On later models, remove the middle seat and the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor access cover. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Caution: If the stereo in your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you have the correct activation code before disconnecting the battery. Disconnect the Fuel Level Sensor electrical connector located on top of the fuel tank. Position the ohmmeter probes onto the Fuel Level Sensor electrical connector and check for resistance. Use the 200 scale on the ohmmeter. With the fuel tank completely full, the resistance of the Fuel Level Sensor should be approximately 17.0 ohms. With the tank empty, the resistance should be approximately 120 ohms. If the readings are incorrect, replace the Fuel Level Sensor. Note: The test can also be performed with the Fuel Level Sensor removed from the fuel tank. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance of the Fuel Level Sensor with the swing arm completely down (tank empty) and with the arm up (tank full). The resistance should change steadily from 120 ohms (E) to approximately 17.0 ohms (F (Connect the ohmmeter to the terminals on the Fuel Level Sensor electrical connector and check the resistance of the Fuel Level Sensor at the empty and full positions). Replacement: On early models, it will be necessary to remove the fuel tank from the vehicle. On later 80 series models, remove the middle seat to gain access to the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor assembly. Carefully angle the Fuel Level Sensor out of the opening without damaging the fuel level float located at the bottom of the assembly. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the Fuel Level Sensor. Remove the screw from the side of the Fuel Level Sensor bracket and separate the Fuel Level Sensor from the assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Q:
How do you access the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit for testing and replacement? Posted by Customer
A:
To access the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit for testing and replacement, start by removing the middle seat to uncover the fuel pump access cover. Before testing the fuel level sending unit, determine the actual fuel level in the tank. Then, remove the rear seat and the fuel pump/sending unit access cover. Disconnect the electrical connector of the sending unit and use an ohmmeter to check for resistance. On the 200 ohm scale, the resistance should be around 3.0 ohms when the tank is full and approximately 110 ohms when it's nearly empty. If the readings are incorrect, replace the sending unit. Alternatively, you can remove the sending unit from the tank and check its resistance with the float arm down (tank empty) and up (tank full). The resistance should change steadily from empty to full. To remove the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank, carefully angle it out without damaging the fuel level float at the bottom. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the screw from the sending unit bracket to separate it from the assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
