Q:
How to replace brake pads? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the brake pads, start by loosening the front wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheels and discard about two-thirds of the fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Position a drain pan under the brake assembly and clean the caliper and surrounding area with brake system cleaner. On 2WD pick-up models, depress the piston into its bore using a C-clamp, making sure the fluid in the master cylinder doesn't overflow. Wash the disc and brake pads with brake cleaner and work on one brake assembly at a time. For 4WD pick-up models and all 4Runner models, follow the accompanying photos and detach the pin retaining clip after washing the brake assembly. While the pads are removed, inspect the caliper for leaks and damage, replacing it if necessary. Also, inspect the brake disc and remove it if machining is needed. Clean and check the caliper mounting bolt before installing it. Install the brake pads on the opposite wheel, then install the wheels and lower the vehicle. Add brake fluid to the reservoir and pump the brakes to seat the pads against the disc. Finally, check the operation of the brakes before driving the vehicle in traffic, avoiding heavy brake applications until the pads have been seated.
