The catalytic converter is an emission control device that reduces pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. It consists of two types of catalysts, the oxidation catalyst and the reduction catalyst, which work together to reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen emissions. When replacing the converter, the vehicle should be raised and securely placed on jackstands, and the nuts on the exhaust flange studs should be sprayed with penetrant before removing them. The catalytic converters can then be separated from the exhaust system and the new converter can be installed in the reverse order of removal.
