Q:
How to deal with piston and connecting rod assemblies? Posted by Customer
A:
When dealing with piston and connecting rod assemblies, it's crucial to use new connecting rod cap bolts during reinstallation. To begin the removal process, first, check for any ridges near the upper limit of ring travel in the cylinder and remove them as needed to prevent piston breakage. Afterward, position the engine with the crankshaft facing upwards and check connecting rod endplay with feeler gauges, replacing connecting rods if necessary. Ensure proper identification marks on connecting rods and caps, or mark them for reference. Gradually loosen and remove connecting rod cap bolts, remove the cap and bearing insert, and push the connecting rod and piston assembly out. Prepare the pistons and connecting rods for inspection and overhaul at an automotive machine shop. For piston ring installation, examine ring end gaps, and insert rings into the cylinder while ensuring proper orientation and measurements. Enlarge the gap if necessary but avoid excessive gaps. Install the oil control ring, then the number two and number one rings, following manufacturer instructions, and use a piston ring installation tool for the top two rings, being careful not to over-expand them. For the final installation, ensure clean cylinder walls, chamfered cylinder bore edges, and a properly positioned crankshaft. Clean and install new upper bearing inserts in the connecting rod and cap, ensuring cleanliness and dryness. Position piston ring gaps at 90-degree intervals, lubricate the piston and rings with engine oil, and use a piston ring compressor to install the piston into the cylinder. Tap gently to ensure proper seating, and check for any resistance. Next, check connecting rod bearing oil clearance using Plastigage and bearing inserts, making adjustments if necessary. After cleaning the journal and bearing faces, apply grease and reinstall the connecting rod, cap, and new bolts, tightening them to the specified torque in stages. Repeat this process for all pistons and connecting rods, ensuring cleanliness, proper orientation, and lubrication throughout. Finally, rotate the crankshaft to check for any binding and recheck the connecting rod endplay if needed, taking appropriate action for resizing if necessary.
