Removal: 1. Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, chock wheels, and wear eye and hand protection. 2. Securely raise and support the vehicle with a jack and jack stands if underbody access is required. 3. Position a drain pan under the area where the drain plug will expel fluid (location varies by system). 4. Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you will be working near electrical components or to reduce risk of shorts. 5. Clean the area around the drain plug to prevent contamination when it is opened. 6. Loosen the drain plug with the correct wrench or socket while controlling for immediate fluid flow and hot fluid. 7. Remove the plug by hand or with the tool and allow the fluid to drain completely into the pan. 8. Inspect the plug, sealing washer or gasket, and the drain opening for debris or damage; keep parts for comparison. 9. Wipe clean the mating surfaces and surrounding area, and contain and dispose of drained fluid per local regulations. Installation: 1. Prepare a new sealing washer/gasket if applicable and have the replacement or cleaned drain plug ready. 2. Lightly lubricate the sealing surface or plug threads with the appropriate clean fluid only if recommended for the application. 3. Start the drain plug by hand to avoid cross-threading and ensure proper engagement. 4. Tighten the plug with the correct tool until snug; avoid over-tightening and consult the vehicle manual for the specified torque. 5. Reinstall any components or splash shields removed for access and clear away tools and rags from the area. 6. Lower the vehicle from jack stands and remove wheel chocks. 7. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. 8. Refill the system with the correct type and amount of fluid per manufacturer instructions. 9. Start and run the engine or operate the affected system briefly, check the drain plug area for leaks, then recheck fluid level after warm-up and top off as needed. Repair tip: Always replace the crush washer or sealing gasket each time the plug is removed and inspect the plug head for rounding-replace the plug if damaged.
