    Q:
How to remove and install the oil pump on Toyota Celica? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the oil pan, first take out the dipstick and unbolt the dipstick tube, pulling it out of the engine, especially on 4A-FE engines where it is attached to the water pump. Detach the oil pick-up tube assembly and baffle plate by removing the nuts and bolts holding them in place. Next, remove the timing belt, lower idler pulley, and crankshaft pulley, ensuring the engine is securely supported from above. Detach the oil pump case from the engine by removing the bolts, and if necessary, pry carefully between the front main bearing cap and the pump case. For engines other than 4A-FE and 7A-FE, separate the pump body from the case by removing the remaining bolts, lift out the driven rotor, and remove the O-ring. Clamp the pump pulley in a padded vise to remove the pulley nut, then take off the pulley and remove the drive rotor. For 4A-FE and 7A-FE engines, remove five screws to lift off the pump cover and then lift out the drive and driven rotors. Clean all components with solvent and inspect for wear and damage, checking the oil pressure relief valve piston sliding surface and valve spring, replacing them as a set if damaged. Measure the driven rotor-to-case and drive rotor tip clearances with feeler gauges and compare to specifications. Pry out the old oil seal and carefully drive a new seal into place, applying moly-base grease to the seal lip. For engines other than 4A-FE, install a new crankshaft seal and O-ring, lubricate the driven rotor with clean engine oil, and place it in the pump case with the mark facing out. Lubricate the shaft, install the drive rotor in the pump body, and reinstall the pulley, tightening the nut to the specified torque. Pack the pump cavity with petroleum jelly and attach the pump body to the case with the long bolts. For 4A-FE and 7A-FE engines, lubricate the rotors and place them in the pump case with the marks facing the cover, then install the cover and tighten the screws to the specified torque. Lubricate the oil pressure relief valve piston with clean engine oil and reinstall the valve components in the pump case. Place a new gasket on the engine block, position the pump against the block, and install the mounting bolts, ensuring the splines on the drive gear engage with the flats on the crankshaft. Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to avoid warping the case, then install the oil pick-up tube assembly and baffle plate with a new gasket or O-ring, tightening the fasteners to the specified torque. Reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order, add oil, start the engine, and check for oil pressure and leaks, finally rechecking the engine oil level.
