Q:
How to remove and install the rear axleshaft, bearing and oil seal? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the axleshaft assembly, start by releasing the parking brake and raising the rear of the vehicle. Support it securely on jackstands and block the front wheels. Remove the wheel and, if equipped, the brake drum. If the vehicle has rear disc brakes, remove the caliper and disc. Remove the ABS sensor if the vehicle is equipped with ABS. Remove the brake assembly. Disconnect the parking brake cable and the hydraulic brake line to the wheel cylinder. Remove the four backing plate mounting nuts to detach the axleshaft from the rear axle housing. Pull the axleshaft out of the rear axle housing and remove the O-ring from the rear axle housing. Discard the old O-ring and install a new one before installing the axleshaft. Use a seal removal tool or a big screwdriver to remove the axleshaft inner oil seal from the axle housing. Use a seal installer or a big socket to install the new seal. If the axleshaft, bearing, or outer oil seal needs to be replaced, take the axleshaft assembly to an automotive machine shop. Drive a new axleshaft inner seal into the end of the axle tube with a seal installer or a big socket, and coat the lip of the seal with clean oil or multi-purpose grease. Install a new axle housing O-ring, applying a light coat of oil to it. Ensure the axleshaft is clean and free of burrs or metal splinters. Deburr any surface irregularities to prevent damage to the seal during installation. Lightly coat the axleshaft with clean oil and insert it into the axle housing, making sure the splined inner end doesn't damage the lip of the new axleshaft seal. Finally, tighten the four backing plate mounting nuts to complete the installation.
