These models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), commonly known as airbags, designed to protect the driver and front seat passenger in the event of a head-on or frontal collision. The system includes airbag modules in the steering wheel and on the right side of the instrument panel, impact sensors at the front of the vehicle, and a sensing/diagnostic module below the instrument panel. Some models also have additional airbags for the driver's knees, side impacts, and curtain shield protection. The airbag modules contain the cushion and inflator unit, with the steering wheel-mounted module receiving an electrical signal through a spiral cable assembly. The passenger side airbag is mounted above the glove compartment and is larger than the steering wheel-mounted unit. The sensing and diagnostic module supplies current to the airbag system and checks its operation upon vehicle start-up. Side and curtain airbags are mounted on the sides of the front seats and along the interior roof, activated by sensors in the event of a side impact. Precautions include disarming the SRS system before working on its components, handling airbag modules with caution, avoiding resistance measurement of SRS components, and proper disposal of live airbag modules.
