The knock control system is designed to reduce spark knock by detecting abnormal engine vibration through a knock sensor.

In four-cylinder models, the knock sensor is positioned on the backside of the engine block and requires intake manifold removal for access. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable, then proceed to remove the intake manifold. Disconnect the knock sensor's electrical connector, remove the retaining nut, and take out the knock sensor. During installation, ensure the electrical terminal of the sensor is slightly angled below the horizontal, otherwise, follow the reverse procedure for reassembly and tighten the retaining nut securely. For V6 models, the knock sensors are located in the valley between the cylinder heads and necessitate intake manifold removal for access. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the upper and lower intake manifolds along with the water transfer hose. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the knock sensors, and depending on the model year, either unscrew the knock sensors (for 1999 through 2003 models) or remove the retaining nuts/bolts (for 2004 and later models). When installing the knock sensors on 2004 and later models, angle the electrical terminals slightly below the horizontal, otherwise, follow the reverse procedure for reassembly and ensure secure tightening of the knock sensors or retaining nuts.
