Q:
How to disconnect, remove, and replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor in Lexus RX330 and Toyota Highlander? Posted by Customer
A:
In four-cylinder models, exercise caution while handling the ECT sensor as damage can impact the fuel injection system. The ECT sensor is located on the left end of the cylinder head. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and partially draining the cooling system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor and unscrew it from the cylinder head. Apply Teflon tape to the ECT sensor's threads, and during installation, ensure secure tightening and refill of the cooling system. In V6 models, also handle the ECT sensor with care. On 3.0L and 3.3L engines, the ECT sensor is on the water outlet casting at the right end of the engine. On 3.5L engines, it's beneath the air filter housing on the left engine end, mounted in the coolant outlet housing. Similar to earlier steps, disconnect the negative battery cable and partially drain the cooling system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor. Depending on the model, either unscrew the sensor from the water outlet housing or, for 2GR-FKS models, carefully remove the retaining clip and pull out the ECT sensor. For the former, use Teflon tape on the sensor's threads and ensure proper tightening. For the latter, ensure full seating before reinserting the retaining clip. Concluding with installation, refill the cooling system as instructed.
