Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands while blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel, ensuring that all four rear brake shoes are replaced simultaneously, but work on one brake assembly at a time to avoid mixing parts. Follow the illustrations for the brake shoe replacement procedure, marking the relationship of the drum to the hub to maintain dynamic balance, and install the adjuster lever over the pin on the front shoe. If the brake drum cannot be easily removed, ensure the parking brake is fully released; if it remains stuck, retract the brake shoes by removing the plug from the backing plate and using screwdrivers to adjust the star wheel. Before reinstalling the drum, check for cracks, score marks, deep scratches, and hard spots, as any of these conditions may require resurfacing at an automotive machine shop. If resurfacing is not an option due to excessive wear, new drums will be necessary, but at a minimum, remove any glaze with emery cloth. Install the brake drum on the axle flange, followed by the wheel and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Make several forward and reverse stops and operate the parking brake to adjust the brakes until satisfactory pedal action is achieved, and carefully check the operation of the brakes before driving.

Remove the brake disc and inspect the thickness of the lining material on the shoes; if the lining has worn down to 1/32-inch or less, the shoes must be replaced. Wash off the brake parts with brake system cleaner, ensuring to clean the parking brake assembly before disassembly. Follow the accompanying illustrations for the brake shoe replacement procedure, which includes removing the rear and front parking brake shoe return springs, the rear shoe hold-down spring, and the shoe strut, as well as popping off the C-washer from the pivot pin and applying high-temperature grease to the contact surfaces of the backing plate. After positioning the parking brake lever and attaching the tension spring, install the adjuster and ensure both ends are properly engaged with the shoes. Place the shoes in position, install the strut and spring, and then the return springs and hold-down springs. Install the brake disc, temporarily thread three wheel lug nuts onto the studs to hold it in place, and remove the hole plug from the brake disc. Adjust the parking brake shoe clearance by turning the adjuster star wheel until the shoes contact the disc, then back off the adjuster eight notches before reinstalling the hole plug. Install the caliper bracket and brake caliper, tightening the bolts to the specified torque, then install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Finally, set the parking brake and count the number of clicks; it should be between five to seven clicks, and if not, adjust the parking brake accordingly.
