Remove the starter motor. Scribe or paint a mark across the starter motor and gear reduction assembly before disassembling the starter motor, solenoid and gear reduction assembly. Disconnect the strap from the solenoid to the starter motor terminal. To disconnect the strap that connects the starter to the solenoid, remove this nut. Remove the screws which secure the gear reduction assembly to the solenoid. To detach the solenoid from the starter motor, remove the screws which secure the gear reduction assembly to the solenoid. Remove the through-bolts which secure the starter motor to the gear reduction assembly. Separate the motor from the gear reduction and solenoid assembly then remove the solenoid from the gear reduction assembly. Separate the starter from the gear reduction assembly and separate the solenoid from the gear reduction assembly. Note the return spring protruding from the solenoid assembly - make sure that this spring is installed before reassembling the solenoid and the gear reduction assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to align the paint or scribe mark.
