Q:
How Do You Troubleshoot and Repair Issues with the Coolant Temperature Gauge and Coolant Temperature Sensor on Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
To troubleshoot the coolant temperature gauge, start by checking the fuses if the gauge is inoperative. If the gauge indicates excessive temperature after running for a while, or if it shows "Hot" as soon as the engine is started cold, there may be issues with the coolant temperature sender. Disconnect the wire at the sender and observe the gauge's behavior. If the gauge reading drops, replace the sending unit. If the reading remains high, there might be a short to ground in the wire or a faulty gauge. In the case where the coolant temperature gauge fails to show any indication after the engine has warmed up and the fuses are fine, shut off the engine and disconnect the wire at the sending unit. Use a jumper wire to connect the wire to a clean ground on the engine, and briefly turn on the ignition without starting the engine. If the gauge now indicates "hot," replace the sending unit. If the gauge fails to respond at all, there may be an open circuit or a faulty gauge. For the removal of the sending unit, start by draining the coolant, then disconnect the wiring connector from the sending unit. Use a deep socket or wrench to remove the sending unit. When installing the new unit, tighten it securely without using thread sealer, as it could insulate the sending unit electrically. Reconnect the wiring connector, refill the cooling system, and check for coolant leakage and proper gauge function.

Q:
How can the resistance of the ECT sensor in a 1999 Toyota Solara be checked? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the ECT sensor resistance, disconnect the electrical connector and use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the two terminals, which should be between 2,500 and 3,000 ohms at room temperature.
