To perform this procedure, it is recommended to have an empty fuel tank. These models have a drain plug that can be removed using a 3/8-inch drive extension. If the drain plug cannot be removed, it is advised to wait until the tank is empty or use a siphoning kit to transfer the fuel into an approved container. Before starting, relieve the fuel tank pressure by removing the fuel filler cap and, if applicable, relieving the fuel system pressure and unplugging the electrical connector for the fuel level sending unit. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, taking caution if the stereo has an anti-theft system. If the tank is full, drain the fuel into an approved container. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands. For fuel-injected models, remove the fuel pump access cover and push the grommet(s) and electrical connector(s) through the cover. Disconnect the fuel lines, vapor return line, and fuel filler pipe, using a backup wrench on the fuel line to prevent twisting and removing the clamps that retain the fuel filler hose and vapor line. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack and a plank to protect it. Detach the fuel line bracket and remove the fuel line or tank protectors. Remove the bolts from the fuel tank support straps and lower the tank enough to disconnect the wires and ground strap from the fuel gauge sending unit. Finally, remove the tank from the vehicle and installation is the reverse of removal.
