Q:
How to access and remove the heater core on 2003 through 2009 Toyota 4Runner? Posted by Customer
A:
The manufacturer recommends removing the entire instrument panel to access and remove the heater core. This is a difficult job that involves disconnecting numerous electrical connectors and has the potential for breakage of delicate plastic tabs on various components. To begin, take the vehicle to a dealer service department or automotive air conditioning shop to have the air conditioning system discharged and the refrigerant recovered. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and wait until the engine is completely cool before draining the cooling system. In the engine compartment, disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall and plug the heater core pipes to prevent leakage. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the evaporator lines at the firewall using special tools. Remove the instrument panel, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and the air conditioning amplifier module. On the left and right sides of the interior, remove the defroster nozzle ducts and the heater-to-register ducts. Remove the floor ducts, reinforcement brace mounting brackets, center console duct box, and the left and right side air ducts. Remove the steering column, fuse and relay box, and release the wiring harness clamps and mounting bolts. Remove the reinforcement brace mounting nuts and bolts, then lift the reinforcement brace and the air conditioning/heater assembly from the passenger compartment. Remove the mounting bolt from the heater core inlet and outlet pipe bracket, and slide the heater core out of the HVAC housing. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and run the engine to check for leaks and proper system operation.
