Removal steps
1. Park on level ground, set the parking brake, place wheel chocks, turn ignition off, and put on gloves and eye protection.
2. Gather required tools (jack and lug wrench if needed, flashlight, small tool for access panels) and keep a helper available for lifting.
3. Open the access/cover where the spare is stored (trunk area, underbody access panel, or exterior carrier)-storage location varies by design.
4. If the vehicle uses an electrical release or motorized hoist for the spare, disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental operation; isolate the terminal with an insulated cover.
5. Remove any trim, cargo, or cover panels blocking access and set all fasteners aside where you can find them.
6. Identify the retaining device (bolt, wing nut, strap, or winch) and release it using the appropriate tool-the method differs by design.
7. Support the wheel and lower or unfasten the carrier slowly; if heavy, have a helper take the weight to avoid dropping the wheel.
8. Remove the spare from its carrier, inspect the wheel, carrier, and fasteners for damage or corrosion, and check tire pressure and condition.
Installation steps
1. Inspect and inflate the spare to the recommended pressure, clean mounting surfaces, and replace any damaged hardware.
2. If you disconnected the battery, keep it isolated until electrical connections (if any) are reattached.
3. With a helper, position the spare into the carrier or mount and align it properly with the retaining points.
4. Reinstall the retaining device (bolt, wing nut, strap, or winch); start fasteners by hand and then snug them securely-do not invent or apply torque values.
5. Replace any covers or trim and stow tools and removed fasteners.
6. If the spare uses an electrical hoist, reconnect the hoist wiring, then reconnect the battery (follow the vehicle's battery reconnection procedure; commonly reconnect positive then negative) and verify the release/hoist functions correctly.
7. Confirm the spare is securely retained by trying to shift it by hand and recheck after a short drive.
Repair tip: Periodically operate the release mechanism and check the spare's pressure and fastener condition to prevent seizure and ensure the wheel is ready when needed.
