About Toyota 86

The Toyota 86 is a series of 2+2 seater sports cars that was jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru and solely manufactured by Subaru. The first Toyota 86 was introduced at the 2011 Toyota Auto Show and went on sale in March 2011 as Scion FR-S. The real Toyota 86 was not available until the Scion brand was canceled in August 2016 and it is also known as the replacement for the FR-S. Now, it is in its first generation and is sold worldwide under different names such as the Toyota GT86, Toyota FT86 and Subaru BRZ.
The Toyota 86 was introduced to the North American when the Scion FR-S was discontinued for the 2017 model year. It only offers one trim level and one body style, 2-door fastback coupe, though it also has an 860 Special Edition package, which gets unique wheels, paint, stripes and body trim. But the 86 is well equipped and comes standard with a decent set of features that include air-conditioning, LED headlights, Bluetooth, a 7-inch touchscreen interface and an eight-speaker sound system. Now, the Toyota 86 is powered by a 2.0 L 4-cylinder engine that develops 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota 86 Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Although being produced by the famous Subaru, who has a solid reputation for high quality and reliability, the Toyota 86 still cannot withstand the natural wearing process. And sooner or later, these common problems will definitely appear on it:
First, engine failure. As the heart of the vehicle, the working condition of the engine is always valued by drivers. However, no matter how powerful it is, as the accumulation of mileage, it will wear and tear. According to experienced Toyota 86 drivers, when the vehicle reaches a certain mileage, the engine will start to make strange sounds while operating and suffer from performance issues such as rough idling, power decreasing while accelerating, poor fuel economy and even hard starting. Therefore, once the Check Engine Light is illuminated, you had better make sure if the Toyota 86 air filter, oil filter, spark plug, engine control module and EGR valve gasket.
Second, premature suspension failure. For a young model like Toyota 86, people will not sense this problem until they suffer an unsteady and unpleasant ride on the vehicle. Considering most drivers do not have knowledge background about the working principles of vehicles, here are some typical signs of the suspension failure. Once hearing grinding or whining sound from underneath the vehicle while driving, feeling intense vibration when putting palms on the steering wheel, vehicle swerving or nose diving when braking, uneven tire wear causing vehicle tilting and having poor handling of the vehicle, then the Toyota 86 shock absorber, sway bar link, trailing arm, coil springs and coil spring insulator must be in trouble.
A perfect ride needs every auto part of your Toyota 86 to be in perfect working condition. However, it is not easy to pay the same attention to every part. Therefore, here we will help you to identify the more vulnerable parts of your vehicle. The windshield wiper and wiper blade are often made from rubber, which is resilient but can wear easily as time passes by. And you are advised to replace it every six months. Moreover, you had better put the Toyota 86 seat belt, cabin air filter, antenna, fog light bulb, headlight and wheel seal on your routine maintenance list for a wonderful driving experience.
