1986 Toyota MR2 Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the camshaft for the 1986 Toyota MR2?
A: Remove the cylinder head cover(s), followed by the timing belt and camshaft timing pulley(s). Measure the camshaft thrust clearance using a dial gauge; if the clearance exceeds the specified maximum, replace the camshaft or the cylinder head. Next, remove the inner timing belt cover bolts, ensuring to disconnect the right side engine mounting bracket if necessary, and slide the cover off the cylinder head. Loosen each camshaft bearing cap gradually in the proper sequence, then remove the caps, oil seal, and camshaft. Apply engine assembly lube to the bearing saddles and install the camshafts, positioning the intake camshaft knock pin at 12 o'clock and the exhaust camshaft knock pin at 5 o'clock. Install the camshaft bearing caps and tighten the cap bolts to the specified torque in the reverse order of removal. Drive the new camshaft seals into place using a socket or a short section of pipe slightly smaller in diameter than the outside diameter of the seals. Complete the installation by reversing the removal steps.
