1990 Toyota Land Cruiser Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Is it more practical and economical for the home mechanic to purchase a replacement cylinder head rather than disassembling, inspecting, and reconditioning the original for the 1990 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: New and rebuild cylinder heads can easily be sourced in the market on most engine types from dealers and auto stores, this makes it less logical and financially viable for a do-it yourself mechanic to rework on the existing cylinder head because it may require special tools to dissect and recondition and in some instances the replacement parts may be extremely hard to source. Disassembly continues with the intake and exhaust valve removal together with related parts with the rocker arm bolts/nuts being removed next, Then, all parts are separated and labeled for reassembly. Before dismantling the valves, the ways should be tagged and the valves and their components should be put in positions that they can be returned to their valve guides later. Then, using a spring compressor on the first valve, push the keepers out of the spring; slowly let go of the spring compressor to extract the retainer, spring, and the spring seat, when there is one. Once the valve has been pulled out you should take out the oil seal from the guide and if you find that the valve does not easily slide then you should lightly gras away the area around the keeper groove. Perform the same for the other valves, and make sure that all the parts are properly arranged to facilitate valve reassembly. After all components have been removed and properly stored, it is necessary to cleanse and check the head, and before you begin cleaning and checking the cilinder head, all needed complete engine overhauls should be completed.
