- Q:How to Remove and Inspect a CV Boot for the 2001 Toyota Avalon?Posted by Frances N.A:To remove and inspect a CV boot, first, remove it and mount it in a vise with wood-lined jaws. Check the CV joint for excessive play and smooth operation throughout the full range of motion. If a boot is torn, disassemble the joint, clean the components, and inspect for damage. To disassemble, cut the boot clamps, remove the clamps and boots, and remove the tripod joint snap-ring with snap-ring pliers. Use a hammer and brass punch to drive the tripod joint from the drive axle. Clean all components and inspect for wear. To reassemble, wrap the splines on the inner end of the axle shaft with tape, slide the clamps and boots onto the axle shaft, and install a new snap ring. Apply grease to the tripod assembly and inside the housing, insert the tripod into the housing, and pack the remainder of the grease around the tripod. Slide the boots into place, adjust the CV axle to standard length specifications, equalize the pressure in the boot, and tighten the boot clamps.Answered by Toyota Parts Specialist Ken / Apr 18, 2026
