The CV boots are very important because they prevent dirt, water and foreign material from entering and damaging the constant velocity (CV) joints. Oil and grease can cause the boot material to deteriorate prematurely, so it's a good idea to wash the boots with soap and water. It's also necessary to inspect the boots for tears and cracks as well as loose clamps. Flex the CV boots by hand to check for tears, cracks and leaking grease. If there is any evidence of cracks or leaking lubricant, they must be replaced.

The first step is to remove the driveaxle and mount it in a vise with wood-lined jaws.

To disassemble, cut the boot clamps, remove the clamps and boots, and remove the tripod joint snap-ring with snap-ring pliers. Use a hammer and brass punch to drive the tripod joint from the drive axle. Clean all components and inspect for wear. To reassemble, wrap the splines on the inner end of the axle shaft with tape, slide the clamps and boots onto the axle shaft, and install a new snap ring. Apply grease to the tripod assembly and inside the housing, insert the tripod into the housing, and pack the remainder of the grease around the tripod. Slide the boots into place, adjust the CV axle to standard length specifications, equalize the pressure in the boot, and tighten the boot clamps.

To check the shock absorbers, push down and release the vehicle at each corner and observe if it returns to a level position within one or two bounces. Listen for any squeaks or noises from the suspension components during this test.
