The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor that changes its resistance based on temperature variations, affecting the voltage signal sent to the PCM; as the sensor temperature decreases, resistance increases, and as the temperature increases, resistance decreases, with any issues in the ECT sensor circuit triggering a diagnostic trouble code. Begin by ensuring the ignition key is in the OFF position, then drain approximately one gallon from the cooling system. Next, disconnect the electrical connector and carefully unscrew the sensor. Before installing the new sensor, wrap its threads with Teflon sealing tape to prevent leakage and corrosion. Finally, installation follows the reverse order of removal, taking care to handle the coolant sensor delicately, as any damage can impact the entire fuel injection system's operation.
